Why is a semi trailer called a "semi trailer"?

In fact, this is mainly determined by the structure of a semi trailer. The wheels of a semi trailer are generally installed at the rear end of the carriage, and it is not possible to stand alone. Instead, it is necessary to attach the front end of the trailer to the saddle behind the tractor. The trailer and the tractor each bear a portion of the weight of the carriage. The tractor not only provides forward traction for the trailer, but also provides upward support for the cargo. The trailer only bears a portion of the weight of the cargo, Therefore, it is called a "semi trailer".

Compared with full trailers, the difference between "semi trailer" and "full trailer" can be more intuitively understood.

In general, wheels are installed at the front and rear ends of a full trailer carriage, so it is possible to stand steadily on its own. When connected to a tractor, the carriage does not need to be attached to the tractor, and only needs to be connected by a traction device. The tractor provides only a forward pull force to the full trailer, without sharing the weight of the goods. In other words, the weight of the goods is entirely borne by the trailer itself.

With the continuous development of vehicle technology, new transportation models are also emerging, such as center axle trailers and car trains, which seem to have an advantage over semi trailers in terms of policy promotion and cargo loading space. Does that mean that the development prospects of semi trailers have become smaller?

Actually, this is not the case.

First of all, from the perspective of vehicle types, although the promotion of center mounted axles and car trains is relatively popular, its disadvantages cannot be ignored: the lower chassis improves the vehicle's requirements for road conditions, and when encountering potholed road conditions, it does not have an advantage; The technology is not mature enough, it is easy to run up and down or swing left and right, and driving stability is poor; The gap between the tractor and the carriage is small, and the carriage will be pushed forward due to inertia in case of emergency braking, resulting in poor safety; The driving stability of multiple carriages is poor, and it is easy to swing or slip, making driving difficult; In addition, the price is on the high side, which is greatly constrained by the purchase cost. Therefore, these two models are always tepid and not hot.

Secondly, from the perspective of national conditions, China has a vast territory, relatively diverse terrain, complex transportation road conditions, and differences in the level of road network construction in different regions, with high requirements for vehicle flexibility, convenience, adaptability, and trafficability; In recent years, the transportation environment has not been very good, and freight rates are generally low. Car owners are more likely to accept models with low front-end costs and strong adaptability to goods. From this point of view, compared to emerging models, semi trailers have had a relatively greater advantage after years of development.

In addition, from the perspective of foreign transportation markets, Europe and the United States have always been at the world's leading level in terms of transportation tools and technology. Some development trends in China's transportation industry, such as lightweight, standardization, specialization, intelligence, and remote control, are also in line with Europe and the United States to a certain extent. In other words, the development of Europe's logistics and transportation industry today may be the development of China's logistics and transportation industry tomorrow. However, in current European and American countries, the transportation volume undertaken by semi trailers accounts for almost 70% to 80% of the total transportation volume. It can be seen that for a long time, domestic semi trailers will still occupy the main transportation force.
