What is the ABS system?
The scientific name of ABS is anti lock system. As the name implies, it is a device that prevents the wheels from locking when the vehicle is in service braking. It can keep the rolling friction state between the wheels and the road surface, so as to improve the friction force (only for non ice and snow roads).
The origin of ABS system?
The ABS system is designed to improve the braking efficiency of the vehicle.
Braking efficiency refers to the ability of a vehicle to forcibly decelerate and stop during driving, mainly including braking distance, braking time and braking deceleration.
If the same vehicle wants to obtain greater braking effect on the same road surface, it can only change the longitudinal adhesion coefficient between the wheel and the road surface during braking. The greater the adhesion coefficient, the better the braking efficiency. The adhesion coefficient depends on the slip ratio of the wheel.
If you want the vehicle to travel along the track in the specified direction during braking, without deviation and side slip, and maintain the steering ability, you need to improve the lateral adhesion coefficient between the wheel and the road surface. The lateral adhesion coefficient also depends on the slip ratio of the wheel.
Through a large number of experiments and analysis, when the wheel slip rate is controlled at about 20%, the maximum longitudinal adhesion coefficient and large lateral adhesion coefficient can be obtained, that is, the best braking performance can be achieved. Thus, the vehicle pioneers were able to control the device with the slip ratio of nearly 20% of the wheels - ABS system.
Advantages of ABS system:
1. The control of the vehicle is enhanced. Vehicles equipped with ABS system can still maintain a great degree of controllability during emergency braking, and can timely avoid necessary obstacles or dangers in the front. When the vehicle without ABS is in emergency braking, it is easy to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in side slip, tail flick and other accidents. At the same time, it is very difficult to turn the vehicle after the braking is locked, because the wheel and the ground are static friction at this time.
2. Reduce the vehicle skidding. Especially on wet and smooth roads in rainy and snowy weather, if the ABS system is not installed in case of emergency braking, the vehicle will continue to slide forward with inertia on the road after the wheels are locked. After the ABS system is installed, the chance of wheel locking can be reduced, so the chance of skidding during braking can also be reduced.
3. Reduce tire wear and prevent tire eccentric wear. After the ABS system is installed, the wheel locking phenomenon during emergency braking is eliminated, and the possibility of flat spots on the tire surface is reduced. If the ABS system is not installed, if the wheel is locked, the contact area between the ground and the tire will be worn all the time, and it is easy to form eccentric wear over time.
Misunderstanding of ABS system:
1. Misunderstanding: ABS system can shorten braking distance.
The main function of ABS is to prevent wheel locking, not to shorten the braking distance. ABS can give consideration to the maximum longitudinal adhesion coefficient and the large lateral adhesion coefficient during vehicle driving, so as to ensure that the vehicle does not lose control. However, this does not mean that the vehicle equipped with ABS can shorten the braking distance. Under rainy and snowy road conditions, the braking distance of ABS is shorter than that when the wheels are locked, but the braking distance on ordinary roads is longer.
2. Usage error: the brake pedal is not pressed firmly.
For vehicles equipped with ABS system, the brake pedal shall be pressed down with one foot during emergency braking, so that the ABS system can play its role. When the ABS system is started, it is normal for the brake pedal to rebound. At this time, do not release the brake pedal, and continue to press it hard, and do not step on it to loosen it. In this way, the vehicle will lose the braking effect and increase the risk.
Why do many car owners dislike the ABS system?
Because ABS can not completely lock the wheels, some car owners feel that the deceleration is not enough after stepping on the brake. In addition, ABS will constantly adjust the brake air pressure during emergency braking, giving the car owner the feeling that it is "spring foot", not as good as "brake king". Once the brake is pressed, the wheels lock up immediately, but the brake drum is easy to crack and damage over a long period of time. Some car owners do not like ABS for simple reasons and high costs. If it is not mandatory, they will not choose this configuration.
Why do owners think Trailer ABS is not good?
1. Technical level
Most domestic trailer manufacturers still stop at the stage of simple welding production, and lack the design and experimental ability for the more complex electronic auxiliary system. In addition, the ABS system has high requirements for installation, and it is easy to make installation errors without special technical training.
2. Market environment
The competition in the trailer production industry is fierce. Many manufacturers strictly control the production costs. High value components such as axles and ABS have become the targets of cost saving. A large number of counterfeit and inferior products flood the market. The vast majority of trailers are equipped with unknown ABS systems. Their greatest role is not to ensure safety, but to ensure smooth registration. Most of them will be removed after registration.
Do semi trailers need ABS?
If ABS system is installed on the tractor, it is recommended to install it on the trailer, otherwise the main trailer may not match, especially under emergency braking.
In addition, the ABS system of the main vehicle can prevent the wheels from locking and perform the braking action of "rolling while sliding", which can directly lock the wheels of the semi-trailer, and the tires are prone to sideslip, which is very easy to cause the vehicle out of control.
In addition, the mismatching of the ABS of the main trailer may also cause the driving wheels of the main vehicle to be in the brake wear state for a long time, resulting in early excessive wear.
